6 Reasons Why You Should Get T.E.F.L. Certified

Getting my TEFL certificate has been one of the best experience of my life. For those of you who do not know what T.E.F.L. means, it stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I was in a point in my life where I wanted to keep traveling, but I was running out of money. Thinking of ways I could keep traveling and not have my bank account hate me at the same time, I came up with teaching English! Looking back now, I knew it was the right choice and if your interested in learning about my experience, I did a full post here.

Here are a few reasons why YOU should consider getting your TEFL certificate and teach English just like me!

Freedom to teach anywhere

Rome, Italy

One of the many reasons why this certificate is prominent is because it gives you the ability to teach just about anywhere in the world. If you want to go to Asia, then you can teach in Thailand on the tropical beaches, or if you like more of a city lifestyle, then head on over to Tokyo, Barcelona or Bangkok. Where ever your heart desires, you will most likely find a teaching job there. Or, if you fancy the nomad lifestyle, teach English online all over the world from your laptop!

No Expiration date

Thats right! It does not expire! You can always go back to your regular old boring job if you want or take a break from teaching without worrying about the certification expiring and doing the class all over again. Its a one time fee and a lifetime of learning opportunities!

Save Money and travel

Yelapa, Mexico

This is the main reason why I chose to receive my certificate. I wanted to see the wold and still make a living wherever I went. If you are a budget traveler like me, then you know this is a great option! Although, you can make more money teaching in Asian countries like Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, and China, you can also teach in countries like Spain, Costa Rica, Prague, and more if you are in it more for the experience.

Learn a new culture

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Moving to different country can help you master their customs and traditions in a way that’s fun and exciting. You can learn a new language while teaching the English language! Imagine trying foods you’ve never heard of, dancing and singing your heart out to foreign music, and meeting the nicest people imaginable. It truly pays off to emerge yourself in a different culture.

I don’t think I would have learned so much about the Thai culture unless I took my course here. I acquired some basic Thai, took a cooking class, and gained an understanding of the ancient temples in Chiang Mai. It was a challenge but rewarding experience I hold close to my heart.

Additionally, it’s important to remember to go with an open mind and to do some cultural research before moving. You don’t want to offend the locals without even knowing so brush up on some online research and find out some basic knowledge about the country before going.

Stepping Stone

Getting your T.E.F.L. certificate is just one part of your stepping stone into the pool of many possibilities. You might not want to teach English forever, and that’s okay. With this certificate, it’s a start into the right direction. There are many different opportunity to work your way up the ladder or even start your own business. You can gain more experience in recruiting, lesson planning, online work and so much more! Let this be the first step you take and the rest will follow.

Get out of your Comfort zone

Krabi, Thailand

You might be reading this and thinking, “This sounds so fun and all but I am not the type of person to just pack up and go.” Believe me, I never thought I would end up teaching English halfway across the world either, but I DID IT and so can you! Getting out of your comfort zone can help you grow immensely as a person inside and out.

It’s important to take baby steps and get used to being uncomfortable first. If your someone who isn’t used to being alone or away from your family, try doing some activities in your home town first. Go to the movies alone or take yourself out to dinner. It might feel weird at first but the more you do it, the more comfortable you will become. They always say, “You gotta get uncomfortable to be comfortable!” and I stand by this 100%.
